Fishing ReportsGreat fishing for all! What a perfect weekend for fishing. Flat sea, sunny skys and loads of fish. Leaving Gulf Harbour, the crew were full of fear that the flat seas and bright sunshine would ruin their plans of a good catch. By the time IMPULSE rounded Whangaparaoa point, it became obvious that these fears were unfounded. Dolphins were playing in the Tiri Cannel, Terns were darting here there and everywhere and the Gannets were plunging into the very flat water. Not the sort of workup that would hold the attention of bottom feeding snapper, but a very good sign none the less. Steaming a couple of miles north of the channel, the sounder picked up some scratchy bottom marks. We anchored IMPULSE over the mark, opting for this rather than drifting because we had a large crew on board which would have made drifting difficult in a moderate tidal current. By the time I shut down the engine and came down from the flybridge, the first snapper was on its way to the surface. Although there were a lot of throw backs, fishing remained steady for the whole of the incoming tide. Snapper up to 6.8kg with a few around the 3 - 5kg mark. Slimy macs, small Kahawai, gurnard and the ever present Threshers kept the anglers busy when the snaps went off the bite for short periods. By 2oclock, the guys had their full bags. Sunday was a different day altogether! As we steamed IMPULSE over the day befores spot, it was apparent that the fish had moved. Hardly any sign at all! So the start of a day full of hunting and moving in search of the elusive fish. Very little wildlife was evident and with only a couple of fish coming up at each stop, we were getting anxious. All through the incoming tide, fish were scarce, not only for us, but by the reports on the vhf, everyone was in the same predicament. The Plan! Find some scratchy mark, sit over it and tell fishy stories until the tide turns. Bingo! No sooner than the outgoing current starts, the fish started coming aboard. By days end, plenty of snapper, gurnard, slimys and kahawai were in the bin. Some days, patience and perseverence is required to get to battle some good fish. Hope to see you soon for some great fishing with the Captain. Good luck Capt. Pete. Selecta Fishing Charters
