Fishing ReportsFly Fishing day trips from AucklandAround the Waikato region the trout fishing has been great with the spring creeks all having good quantities of early session fish, some quite a bit larger than normal. The Waimakariri Stream above highway 5 has been great (ask the farmers first please), a dry nymph/combo with a tungsten bead hair & copper (with a hot spot) or Peter's hot spot pheasant tail working well. Ther are a lot of fish sitting on the dropoffs so walk slowly and target any of the sandy holes (you will be suprised how shallow water they can be in) The Waihou above Whites road has some neat water and is fishing well will some large fish present as well as heaps of smaller fish that put a great fight. Files and set up the same as above, you need quite a bit of weight to get down in these creeks as the flow is deceptive. Yoshi fished the Whirinaki River below the Minginui township and reported he had awesome fishing, again try a dry/nymph combo or two nymphs if you prefer. In the clear water if you use an indicator make it as small as possible. As it heats up this month you will get fish comming to the dry, a green hympy is a good beat as the beatles come on. If you prefer lake fishing Kuratau has been great, use a fast intermediate or about a DI3 line. A small woolly bugger (size 10 or 12) has been best, either black or Yoshi’s brown woolly (with orange tungsten bead). Fish with a slow figure of eight or a slow strip. Remember to hang the flies near the boat on the retrive. Shore fishing can be good here as well. Get out there and have a go, Paul Dewar. From
