Wind, wind, and more wind-it just wont go away!!
INSHORE
Inshore fishing has been quite hard on the whole-Water still 14.2 around here, and fish are still lethargic.
If you are going to fish snapper either go right in sub 10m deep and burley hard with big tackle , of go out to 30-40 metres if the weather will let you.
The MBGFC snapper competion here in the weekend said it all- best snapper only 4 kilos or so, and a lot of gun fishos took part!!!-but weather was a shocker too!!, with 25-30 knots SW-YUK !! Moon phase was also coming up to full so that didnt help either.
By getting out to 30-40m, at least you can bolster your catch with Terakihi as well.
Try out on the sand between Gt Merc and Kuaotunu , and thru to Korapuke , Black Rocks, Middle , Green etc .
DEEP
Good Hapuka and kingfish fishing if you can ever get out there!! Our trip on saturday- early before the wind (20 + knts by lunchtime) paid dividends, getting 20 + kingis to the boat-only 2 kept by 5 anglers-(conserve your fishery Whitianga), although size was down , a good time had by all.One Japanese angler was kind enough to try the BOZOS prototype "Kingi Kruncher" soft bait for me against the rest of this friends on good jigs up to $100 value-i.e Japanese Sanme brand.
This long whippy soft bait was first trialled on Stingray last year by tackle manufacturer Bozos from Australia. It was impressive then, and now I had version 2 to trial. It caught as many fish,or more in the same time period-45mins- as any of the jigs, BUT most important point of difference- NO BARRACOUTA!!!. All the others were landing approx 2 barras to every one Kingi average, during the same period-We could be on to something here....- as it is a soft bait with no flash to attract the coutas.
More testing needed here to prove anti Barra abilities, but it sure catches the kingis, and talk of retail price being around 1/4 to a 1/3 rd of Jig prices.!!!Watch the Sportfishingnz website, or the advert in NZ Fishing News for its release in the future.
Hapuka are spawning now, and in closer than some would be otherwise. If only the wind would drop, so we can access them !!!
Till the wind settles, its get up early- hope for a lull, then home when it turns to custard!!!
