Fishing Reports

Waikato/Rotorua update

Report just in from Mike Cotter from O`Keefe`s  in Rotorua....

At the moment all the rivers and streams are high and dirty.  The exceptions are the spring creeks, principally the Waihou and Waimakariri, the Waihou especially is fishing well.  The Ohinemuri fishes well with a little colour, however there’s a little too much water in it right now, pounce when it drops.  The Mangatutu Stream was the Waikato’s best for the opening week.

Rotorua was really disappointing, few fish landed in the Ohau Channel, the smelt are not there and the majority of fish caught were resisdents.  The smelt are expected soon and with them the big fish.  Even the lakes were slower than usual on opening with the fish not close in.

And a further note from Andrew Perring....

The rotorua area went off. Most consider it the best opening for a decade but fewer around to enjoy it this year

Al ot of fish in the 6 6lb mark with a few 7-8lbers caught on tarawera & maybe tarawera was the pick of lakes

The rivers went gang busters on opening day. A few of the upper areas holding good numbers of fish providing great fly fishing

However a settling in the weather will open up more fly fishing. The ohinemuri will always be high right now but the waitawheta is the spot until then....
