Fishing Reports

The Store Report for August 31st to Sept 3rd

Good morning, well we have returned from our wanderings refreshed and ready to go, the snow was fantastic as was the weather in the south island! We returned to rain and gale force wind that will make it challenging for those that wont to be out on the water today.

Those fishing the exposed spots of the fishery will need to wear a hat and be wary of flying objects! We have a very strong westerly that is whistling through and will be around for a day or so. The wind will ease as the weekend continues and it looks that we may have a fine day one sunday and monday for a treat. We also have forecast some rain showers but not anything that will make a significant difference.

The fishery is busy with anglers which is traditional at this time of the year and even more so this year. It means that at times you will find that the spots that your keen to fish may be busy, so its a matter of fishing outside of your comfort zone, which often leads to exciting results as you discover other water.

Rivers have recovered after a period of rain which has seen them come up and down, fish with a marked difficulty and then fish as if we didnt know that fish ever went off the bite. Those that were here over the past weekend enjoyed some of the best fishing of the season, despite the numbers of anglers on the water. The past few days has seen the rivers return to lower clearer conditions and as always a marked more difficulty. Those that are fishing to the conditions, fishing lighter, riffley water and concerntrating on water that is often missed are finding fish, as are those that are prepared to fish a wet line.

Fish are of a mixed bag, still smaller and some not as wonderful as you would expect but thats fishing. Though there are still lots of smaller fat, good fighting fish waiting to give you some sport.  Even this season looks as if we arnt going to get the huge deludges that other areas have had which means that the survival rate of those fish that survive spawning, will increase numbers again thus lowering the average size of fish in future seasons. At least we have fish to fish too, and lots of them if your prepared to fish to the conditions.

Wind is forecast to ease over the weekend which will allow those that enjoy fishing the streams a chance to get on the water, or even the T/t or Delta is a thought!
