Fishing Reports

Mid Winter Puka and....Marlin!!

There has not been a whole lot of fishing going on over the last three weeks, due to persistent easterlies and on hell of a storm! For the past week the coastline has been getting a good old hammering from a solid swell, but once the sea dies down next week the snapper fishing along the coastline should be on fire, with snapper in close feeding on broken up kina and other shellfish.

When we have been out over the last month the fishing has been very good. OUT DEEP Hapuka are now resident around most of the pins around the Aldermen Is and Castle Rock. The snapper fishing around them has also been good, but you would have to imagine the shallows will be the place to fish after the current swell subsides. Pete Cross on the Innkeeper, has been getting amongst the hapuka and snapper of late with several good fish caught last week.

If you are keen to get amongst the Puka in the coming months give us a holler. Whether you’re on your own or have a group of mates we have a range of boats to suit and get you out and amongst it. VANUATU MARLIN TRIP - SPOT AVAILABLE! We’re escaping the dodgy weather for warmer shores for a week in search of big blue marlin, wahoo and XOS yellowfin in Vanuatu from 1-8 September.

We have an awesome package ($2,600) which includes flights ex Auckland, accommodation and fishing aboard Vanuatu’s top boat. Get in touch in it sounds like you on 0274 834 011. Word has it the fishing is really firing at the moment and having lived there before I can vouch for September being a great time for marlin and tuna. SOFTBAIT GULP softbait has really come into its own around Tairua as the water has cooled down. Early morning and late afternoon are about the only time cutbaits have been working around the coast and softbait will often provoke a strike from a decent snapper in the 5-10 pound mark.

It is amazing the quality snapper fishing we have within 5 minutes from the ramp! We’ve been blown away with how effective softbaits are and if you would like to see just how effective they are then come down and try one of our Berkley set ups out and catch a few snapper for yourself on some GULP! All the best Carl EPIC Adventures, Tairua www.epicadventures.co.nz
