Winter's Finally Here !!-Whitianga Fishing Report For June

Well finally winter has arrived so maybe things will get back to normal !!

Snapper

Snapper fishing has still been patchy due to high water temps -still 16-17 degrees- which have seen the snapper all over the place for months now, but not really concentrated anywhere.

Hopefully this cold weather will pull temps down and then, in response, will the snapper pour on to the reefs to put on condition for winter (HA HA-its already winter..),or will they flag it and go straight out to the deep ??Who knows??

Kingfish

Kingfish are still around inshore, and being as naughty as usual when it comes to feeding, but as is becoming the norm, ignore the fussy inshore guys and go out and jig offshore, which has continued to be great right through this year so far.

NEWS FLASH -BIG KINGI Landed !!!

Yes folks just when all us main players in the Kingi jig scene were starting to doubt that you could get the bigger HOG  size kingis on a jig, local crayfisherman and expert recreational fisherman, Martin Holmes nailed a 31.5 kg fish just to prove us wrong. Top work and congrats to Martin, and landed on a Williamson 400g jig- my personal favourite of the NZ available jigs- See New Zealand fishing news this month if you want the lowdown on a new 650 grm japanese jig I have been using to huge success!!! But at $120 each you wouldnt want to find many Barracouta!!! OUCH financially !!!

Hapuka

Hapuka time is coming on, and some good catches already, with a local group catching  a fish of over 30 kgs recently,  so time to get out deep and get some big barracouta baits on and take revenge on all the barras that nailed your kingi jigs!!Any of the offshore pins are holding some amount of them, so do some prospecting in 100-200m on any foul, not just the pins.

Good Fishing!!!
