Fishing Reports

June Report - It's Snapper Time!

The days may be getting shorter and colder, but the fishing is still red hot!

SNAPPER
Snapper are well and truly the highlight at the moment. They have moved in very close from 15m into the real shallow stuff.

While they are there in numbers, they can be pretty hit and miss on baits at this time of year. Generally you can't go wrong fishing at dusk, but with the offshore winds and very clear water we have at the moment, light line and small baits tend to be the best bet for scary fish during the day.

The last month has seen a pretty consistent pattern for us. The straylining is good in the morning, but goes off as soon as the sun gets high and the fish get cagey. Switching to softbaits on the drift has seen us hooking into bigger fish, more frequently.

The Monday of Queens Birthday was a classic example, a good run of fish in the morning straylining, but nothing huge, tapering off to nothing. Then as soon as we switched tactics, Phil Hayward, who was fishing with us using softbaits for the very first time ever, hooked into a 14pd snapper on his second cast, hooked on the never fail - a 5" GULP Nuclear Chicken. Needless to say he is now hooked on softbaits!

The word from freedivers has been the same, lots of snapper hanging in big numbers in patches along the coast and around the islands.

KINGFISH
There are still kingi's around. We had an absolute horse around the 70pd mark come into check out a big kahawai while livebaiting along the coast last Friday, so the big fellas are around. Fish around the 15kg mark are pretty common at the moment, both along the coast and Shoe and Slipper.

The Aldy's pins are still firing and we've had trips with non-stop jigging sessions on 15kg-20kg kings. They can take a while to find, but once the sounder blacks out you know the fun is about to begin!

TREVALLY
Now is the time to tangle with a Trev out of Tairua. Laying a good burley trail and fishing small baits on light line will have you tangling with plenty of good sized trevs - great fun and great eating!
