Fishing ReportsGreat Barrier fires up!T'was a great weekend! Our team fished the Warkworth Gamefish Club 10kg Classic based out of the clubrooms at Sandspit. The weather played ball for the most part and with the forecast being reasonable made the fishing pretty good too. We took out top honours with a 9.66kg Snapper and secured 3rd, 4th and other fish prizes for our efforts. We fished Great Barrier but took an extra day outside contest hours to have a crack at the Kingfish that have been crashing through the bait schools. Needless to say when we found them the action was fast and furious and one of the team picked up a PB on 10kg line. These Kingfish were caught outside the contest hours so weren't weighed. Also had a few dives and secured enough crayfish to keep the crew happy for a while. Have a look a the website for some recent photos - www.charterconnection.co.nz Whilst you are on the site have a look at the new boat in the fleet too. BEYOND LIMITS is a 14m Powercat set up for day trips and extended charters with comfortable accomodation for 10. Our skipper Dan, like all our skippers comes from a commercial fishing background, which means he knows where to find fish all year round. Combined with DIVERSITY, these two vessels are capable of carrying large groups for stay aways at the Barrier, either stay aboard or using the accomodation on Great Barrier. You will also see later on in this report that DIVERSITY will be running casual trips to the Barrier along with our usual day trips. These are great fun! So what's been happening around the traps...... Tiri has not really been producing. For best results in this area at the moment get in close and burley up, try and get the current flowing over some reef structure along the edges of the channel or in the foul along the back of the island. Kawau had been fishing quite well but seemed to slow down as the moon got bigger. The Takatu coastline in the current is still producing a few snapper and trevally again with the burley trail working and casting fresh baits like piper and mackerel into the shallows. Flat rock has also been giving up a few but it is still a Dr Jekyl Mr Hyde place to fish being good one day and not that flash the next. Little Barrier is fishing from all accounts quite well. The 50m areas seem to be best and as yet the 'coutas haven't made too much of an appearance. As the water cools though I'm sure they'll be back so keep that in mind when thinking about burleying. In close along the southern coast of the island is holding snapper, small kingfish and trevs. Big trevs and a few reasonable snapper have also come from the Horn Rock area and when the weather has been good some of the guys have been doing alright on the hapuka out the back of the Mokes and off the top of the Barrier. As I mentioned before Great Barrier has been going pretty well especially in close along the weed lines and in the shallows. The deeper pins are still holding kingfish that are taking drifted live baits and of course the long jigs. We had a lot of fun on both. The 'couta haven't shown up here in large numbers either which is great. When the weather allows we'll be back up to the Needles where we've been doing pretty well with the big snapper.
