Fishing Reports

Big Kings out of Tairua

Well, the last two months seem a blur of big fish and screaming reels!  We've had an absolute ball with some great fishing and lots of happy guests!

KINGS IN CLOSE!

Most of the action is in close at the moment, with stacks of bait and loads of kahawai in close to shore.  The bait seems to shift around quite a bit so a reef that is fishing well one week might be devoid of any life the next.

You can usually tell a reef that is full of bait by getting out early in the morning, usually it is boiling with action first thing in the morning and for the last two months there have been kingi's crashing bait left right and centre - a nice livey drifted through them can only produce one thing and that is a screaming reel, bent rod and sore arms!

We ventured north for the recent Matarangi big snapper comp, and found similar action up there with three kings up to 19.2kg before 8.30am in the morning.

As the day goes on livies pinned near the bottom under sinker seem to be working best.

KINGS OUT WIDE!

The pins out wide of the Aldermen Islands have also produced some fantastic action for the last two months.  Big jigs are doing the trick and pink and orange 400gm lures seem to be doinproducing the bigger fish, with plenty of fish around the 20kg mark.  In deep water, kingfish hooked on jigs fight like they are on steroids!

KINGS ON SOFTBAITS!

We've recently gone with the softbait craze and have been having a ball, not only on snapper and kahawai but also big kings.  The best so far on our 6kg Berkley Dropshot Rods and Abu spinning reels has been a 40pd king, caught on 20pd Vanish trace and a large Nuclear chicken.  The fish was hooked in 8m of very reefy water, and an epic battle of over one hour ensued!

SNAPPER TIME!

While the big kings are still around our attention moves to snapper.  After three months of endless kingi action it is good to finally be distracted with some big snapper moving into the area.   There have also been some mighty trevs around, and crayfish scraps in the burley seem to be working a treat for both.

Get in touch if you'd like to get amongst the action in the next couple of months, we have the odd space available.
