Fishing Reports

Western Bay still firing on fly...

With the slight drop in water temperatures a change in the fishing is noticable right now... not that it's slowed down at all, but it has changed.

The numerous rat Kings we were experiencing in vast numbers are a lot less noticable and their bigger friends seem to be in better abundance...

Kahawai numbers have gone through the roof and some spectacular action was available around ANZAC Day as the schools worked baitfish and when coming over the reef we fished would be attacked by packs of Kingfish. We had some spectacular visual fly-fishing to these kings on the surface... many of them of very good size!

Dave Wood and Brian Hackshaw visited for a couple of days recently... I've fished with Dave on many occasions but hadn't fished with Brian before; it was great to get these guys into some great fishing and some firsts for both. Brian with his first SWF fish after thousands of them on conventional tackle and Dave, who has caught a lot of saltwater fish but tamed his first Kingfish on fly!

Here are some images of the trip...

As mentioned earlier, some of our best catches, size wise, have occurred of late...

The action has been relatively consistent across most of the tides with a noticeable drop around slack water outside the harbor entrance. Inside the harbor the action has been reasonably consistent and the snapper are still biting well. Blue Gum Bay, in the shallows has been a real hotspot, especially at night, and we've found we had better fish, size wise, by using large flies like "FatBoys" instead of our usually smaller Clouser’s.

All in all this is the best fishing of the season right now... we'll be getting out and making the most of it while it lasts and I'd encourage anyone able to, to do likewise...
