Fishing Reports

Additional Detail to January Report

The last report gave an overview of the current fishing situation- here is the finer detail....

Inshore

Snapper :out on the sand, as outlined, 20- 40 m - best places seem to be the back of Centre island, the coast from Round island to Matapaua bay, Kuatuno thru Blackjack cliffs to Otama, Anywhere west of Great Merc, north of Middle, Stanley and Double Island, at present.

Kingfish: The usual suspects- Ti Paki Point Rocks,Whale  Island, Never Fail Rock, Richards Rock,Green Island foul, Korapuki Island, and a huge school seen between Stanley and Double on the "Bridge" a few days ago.

Gamefish

Basically anywhere !!- is where both Yellowfin and Marlin have come from so far.The bad news is that there is no concentration of gamefish anywhere in particular. The only good news is that fish have come out of all depths from 100m on, and most of the bait in in the 80 -200 m zone, so you don't have to go to South America now like you did earlier in the season. Mind you that doesn't stop everyone from stampeding out deep where there is very little bait, and I truly believe that if we put in as much effort in the inner zone as is done out wide, a surprising number of fish would be hooked.

Last season we went out wide all over the place,  up to 2000m but the 10 shots we got were just about all in 100-250 m, one shot  in fact in 30 secs after the lures were put on in 110 metres- How many did we drive past??? Stay with the bait- resist the current "go wide" fashion, unless you particulary want a blue at the cost of less Stripy shots. One trailer boat gamefisho here-"Mr Niggly" to the locals, refuses to go out past 200m EVER, due to fuel costs etc, and he gets as many shots as anyone, staying in the bait/bird zone all day.

Think about it -Those fish have always come here to gorge themselves on our once abundant INSHORE bait schools.........Inshore......!!
