The hauraki gulf is starting to fire up with the Worm beds in Whangaparoa bay, and the middle ground between Tiri And Rakino Island starting to fish extremely well on both tides, Small cut cut baits of Pilchard and bonito seem to work better than the big baits.
Use just enough weight to get to the bottom free spool the bait along the bottom, keep the bait in good contact though, the fish will pick the bait and away you go. A single hook seems to work best a circle hook will help unwanted fish be able to released, by hooking them in the mouth. Lots of burley, my favorite is Pilchard Bonito mix put about two thirds of the way down.
The fish seem to be come in waves so a little patience will some wonderful fish come on board. The fish are varying in size with fish from 2 to 3 pound the norm but waves of bigger Female fish coming through, Fish of the magic Twenty pound mark are common, and plenty of fish around the 12 to 14 pound mark very common.
The middle ground in the deeper water out the back of Tiri and Kawau Island has also started to fishing exceptionally well, big schools of pillies are being herded up by dolphins whales and blasted apart by the birds on the surface, this causes a feeding frenzy for all the scavenging fish in the area.
Boats lucky enough to come across these work ups are being treated to an unbelievable few hours of fishing, All forms of fishing are working here, with sp’s ,jigs and baits often being nailed by hungry fish swarming around to feed on the left over of these big boil ups. The fish are all in good size with fish from 6 to 15 pound the norm.
The outer deep reefs like Horn rock and Anchorite rock are still very slow, and are probably not worth the big trips for a good feed now the fish are starting to fill the inshore waters. However these spots will soon by in habituated by schools of kingfish as the water really starts to warm up, this will be exciting time for anglers waiting to test there skills against these mighty green torpedoes.
