Fishing Reports

Well it's like summer has arrived a few months early up here in the Bay of Islands. We have had a week of February weather and the fishing is not bad either! Some good sized Kingis around and looks like the snapper spawning is not far off.

And you don't have to go out far to catch them either. Alec, a mad keen fisherman from England who is staying with us asked where he could go and fish off the rocks somewhere close so I told him one of my favourite spots. So off he goes to the made-for-fishing rock ledge below the Waitangi golf course. I love this place first thing in the morning, million dollar views as the sun rises over a mist shrouded Russell and islands beyond...even if the fishing isn't hot it has to be the ultimate way to start the day.

But when, like Alec, you return home with a lovely fat 3.5kg snapper off the rocks it is even better. And then later enjoying the sun up by the pool with a chilled Sav Blanc washing down some fresh snapper and salad....well. does life get much better? Alec thinks it could...next time he is going to do 9 holes after the fishing...apparently his rod fits nicely in the trundler :)
