Daylight savings is only a few days away and the way the fishing is going, things are looking great for the lead in to Christmas. Good numbers of snapper are starting to fill the gulf, they are still a little shy on the bite but will only improve as the water warms up and they condition themselves for spawning.
Big workups are also becoming a common feature in the outer gulf at the moment, with this being a prime opportunity to nail some good fish on jigs or soft bait dropped down behind the work ups.
Tiri Channel
The hole of the Tiri Wharf in around 25 mtrs of water has been fishing extremely well mid tide, as the current picks up so has the fishing, the snapper are all of reasonable size with 4 to 6lb panies the common catch at present. The never fail flasher rig seems to be the go with either the Black Magic Snapper snatcher or the mustard demon circle rig doing the damage. Best bait seems to be Strips of squid.
Rakino Squid Wreck
Has held fish all winter, but like most places you can sit there all day waiting for the bite. This has changed some what with the snapper feeding well on the incoming tide and going rite of the bite on the out going. Have found this wreck fished best on the drift, A couple of dummy drifts first up to get the pattern of the drift, then away with the baits, This spot is often abundant for John Dory, so a livie drifted over the wreck will often produce these beautiful tasting fish. Best rig here is an Aussie stray line rig (sinker above the swivel); use only just the rite amount of weight to get to the bottom. Too much and you will foul up, not enough and you will never get down. So be a little patience, but the reward will be some great eating fish.
Scallops
The scallops seem to be in fantastic condition at present, the colder water over winter seems to have let them put on some amazing conditioning, All the scollies we got the other day were as big as my hand (out of shell), with huge roe’s, very delicious. But be conservative in your takings, let’s keep them like this for the future and let the stocks build up.
Day light savings is fast approaching so I guess there will be plenty of boats heading out after work now, so good luck see you on the water.
Till next week
