Fishing Reports

Hauraki gulf fishing

The days are starting to get a bit longer and the fishing has started to get a little better along with it. The scallops also seem to be in great condition for this time of the year as well.

Noises group
Has been fishing extremely well late in the day, with fresh bait doing the damage on some very good snapper - many well into the double figure mark. Change of light has definitely been the time for best results here. Arrive a little early set a good burley trail and load up on some fresh jack mackerel. These baits will be monstered by snapper as the sun disappears over the horizon. The very shallow waters around the noises seem to be the best areas.

Billy goat point (Motutapu Island)
Have had some fantastic fishing here on both tides. I know there has been a lot of talk on soft plastics at present and this is one area we have done exceptionally well with them. The area of the point on the edge of the drop off around 13 metres is holding excellent numbers of fish. We struggled badly here with baits, but moving baits and in particular the soft baits on the drift were deadly. We managed some great fish , nothing into double figures, but some great eating fish. If you are yet to try this type of fishing get into it, the fish are very aggressive on the bite with them. If you want to check out a good deal try this link to topcatch

Thompson’s point
Mike from TOPCATCH BAIT AND TACKLE fished an overnighter with Bruce Duncan last Fri/Sat. They fished the dusk period 50m off the tip of Thompson’s Point, Onetangi Bay and had outstanding success. Fish were thick on the sounder, in coming tide, no wind. They landed 12 fish in an hour with several between 8 and 12 pounds. The boys tried the same spot the next morning, fish still there on the sounder but no bites.

A quick dredge for scallops on the way to Waiheke and back. Best catches were in Onetangi Bay, just around Thompson’s point heading into the bay. Dredge runs further into the bay were poor. The roe’s were well developed here compared to scallops taken 2-3 km’s back towards Motuihi Island.

The rangi shallows
The shallow water around Rangi has been fishing reasonably well for this time of year. Get right in shallow (4 to 5 meters) of water and burly the hell out the area. You will have to fight off all the yellow-eyed mullet but there are plenty of snapper cruising the area, all in very good condition and they will give you good feed for the effort put in.

Summer is getting closer closer and closer now, so it’s a good time to get those rods and reels serviced and respooled. So pop down and see the boys at Topcatch and get ready for some great spring fishing.
