Fishing Reports

Cooling water thins out the fish.

With such a great week of calm, sunny and mostly very fishy weather behind us it is hard to imagine that we had snow on the ranges behind Coromandel 2 weeks ago. So far as the “mostly very fishy” part goes the fishing has been good but for 1 day where we struggled to string a good session together. I guess that fish don’t feed all day everyday and it is pretty rare to end a day with only a dozen or so fish aboard. Anyway here’s what we’ve been up to.

Tiri has been holding some really nice fish around the reefs at the back of the island and the guys using soft plastics have been doing quite well in closer to the island casting into the wash and the deep little guts that abound the place. ½ pilchards on a ledger or a strayline rig are working in the deeper spots especially the afternoons and evenings at the moment.

Flat Rock too has had its moments but I have found that it has tapered off from the fast and furious action we experienced from the area a few weeks back. The evenings will be the go out here. The “razor gang” are in attendance out here at the moment and in fact just about anywhere north of the Noisies will have a few ‘Couta lurking about.

Cape Colville is where we have been hanging out for the most part of the past week with pretty good results. It is a bit patchy and you have to make the odd move every now and then especially when the sharks turn up. Oddly enough the ‘couta haven’t been too much of a problem in here. Plenty of variety with snapper, trevally, cods, terahiki and all the usual reef species.

The Middle Gulf has been working well too but for 1 trip where as I mentioned the fish didn’t want to feed. There are huge patches of bait fish being rounded up by dolphins and the occasional whale. These can be spotted by keeping an eye open for the gannets diving. The best work ups out here are the ones that last ½ an hour or more and allow the snapper to get into the action often taking baits in mid-water. Jigs and soft plastics have been working well too.

Little Barrier hasn’t really fired up yet so I have been drift fishing the deeper reefs (when the group aboard is not too large or are willing to co-operate with each other). These are fishing better than the foul around the island and some good snapper (to about 8kg) have come from large baits. The jigs have picked up a few good fish too but it is the bleeding baits that are doing the job. The ‘couta have been a problem and have shredded up numerous rigs but overall it is worth it.

The ITM Fishing Show season starts again soon so keep an eye out for it on Saturdays, 4:30pm, TV 1. You will see us in action on the July 15 show – a must see for snapper fishos in the Gulf. We also have updated the website and you can check it out at www.charterconnection.co.nz

Flick us an email or give us ring to get on the casuals list and be kept in the loop about future trips and the winter fishing specials.

Cheers
