Fishing Reports

In closer in the weather

Well that southerly sure cooled things down- except the fishing.

Kawau and Takatu have been fishing well. The snapper aren’t huge but I’m sending crews home with a good feed and yesterday we filled the boat with snapper to around 4kg from one part of a well known reef with a light on it…..Burley was the key I reckon and having the patience to sit it out and wait. A few good trevally and blue cod added some flavour to the catch. Rat kingies still around the rock too.

Out wider around the middle gulf area there is acres of activity including dolphins rounding up schools of pilchards and smashing through them with gust. Look for the diving gannets as these are the prime indicator. Drifting is probably the best way to go about getting into the feeding snapper under these work ups. Long jigs, soft plastics, flasher rigs, strayline rigs- hey they all work when the action is fast and furious like it has been. They may be a few miles further out after this cold blast goes through.

Little Barrier – patchy! Geez, I’m going to leave the place alone for a while. It doesn’t help having to hide from the wind out here either. Sure cuts your options down. On the whole it has been fishing OK but lately all the trips I have done out there and from reports off other boats it has been a bit tough this past few weeks. Go for drift in varying depths would be my advice and have a look along the 40m mark off the rangers hut area or in between Horn Rk and the south east corner of the island. There’s some low foul in there that can hold well over the cooler months.

Have heard that a few small puka are starting to show up around the Needles and the Mokes. Need better weather than this to get there though! Around Tryphena should be fishing well as should some of the deeper foul in the Colville area especially when the tides are smallish and you can get a bait down without 10oz of lead. The Kings of Coro comp is on later this week and I hope the weather improves for all those crews in it.

We have a winter special on MAJURO at the moment for local fishing and are still running trips out wider so to stay in the loop flick us an email to deepsea@clear.net.nz or call or text me on 021 2446346.

Cheers
