Winter Fishing

The fine weather has certainly deserted us, with strong winds and rain making fishing in the gulf uncomfortable at best. However when the small windows of opportunity do appear the fishing has been reasonably good.

DAVID ROCKS
Has been holding good numbers of snapper here at present. With good numbers of John Dory also present in the area, a live Jack Mackerel on a single hook ledger rig with a heavy sinker should result in some very well conditioned Johnnies.

The snapper have been at times a little hard to get on the bite, plenty of burley will get them started - and will also result in some bigger fish. “FRESH IS BEST” – fresh jacks are the go for the bigger fish.

RANGITOTO
Another area that has been fishing exceptionally well for the time of the year. Plenty of schoolies have taken residence here at present, plenty of burley and small cut baits cast out the back into the burley will result in a nice feed of good table fish.

Well worth a try is the Berkley gulp soft baits in the shallows. Again plenty of burley , and cast your gulps out into the trail, slowly slowly retrieve them using slow jerking actions then retrieving little by little, our results on these yesterday were far superior than baits.

ORERE POINT / KAWAKAWA BAY
Has been fishing well early in the morning before the wind gets up, Some very good fish in the shallows , with plenty of fish hitting baits before they get close to the bottom, use very light weights – on most occasions less than ½ ounce. Again a good burley trail will result in some outstanding fish; there have been some very good fish around this area at present with the odd double figure fish gracing the deck.

FIRTH OF THAMES
Fishing the 42mtr mark is producing some very good fish, and some big double figure specimens have been very common at present. Use your sounder to locate marks, a good way to increase your bite is to drift fish this area, when the bite comes on, drop the pick with a good burley bomb and get ready for some hot action.

TIRI ISLAND (CHANNEL)
Has been fishing exceptionally well on the incoming tide, plenty of big fish in good condition are hitting baits hard here as the tide picks up. Best rig seems to be the Mustad long red flasher rig. Some outstanding fish are being caught on this rig, with several fish well into the double figure mark rewarding anglers who are making the effort.

KINGS OF THE COROMANDel
This will be a big week coming up for those chasing these big green torpedoes. And there seems to be a few mean green machines about.

Port Jackson Reef is holding some big fish at present, with divers reporting some fish holding up in the strong currents present up the top.  Some big kings have also been seen lurking around the Noises but are easily spooked in the shallow water. (Caution you will need heavy tackle to stop some of these beasts)
