AON southern bait comp results

20/21 May 2006- Aon Southern Bait challenge boat and shore comp

Over 200 anglers fished near perfect conditions on the Saturday but had 15 to 25 knot northerlies to put up with on the Sunday. There were 125 boat anglers in 50 boats, 50 shore anglers plus another 20 kids and 7 kayaks entered in the comp. We had 16 team entries and 54 most specie section entries.

There were separate sections for shore fishing and boat fishing and a combined section for kingis, snapper and kahawai. The kids, kayaks and ladies had there own prize sections and there were prizes for best team, best photo and most species. You could fish anywhere from Otaki river through to Castlepoint which meant there was always going to be somewhere to fish whatever the conditions.

We had a few boats going out from Kapiti and the Wairarapa but most fished out from Mana on the west coast or out from Wellington harbour and south coast. The shore fishers were scattered wide with most chasing gurnard and snapper in the harbour.

The prize/giveaway pool this year topped $14,500. There were nine eligible species for boaties and nine off the shore. We gave away a shimano TLD 50 2 speed for the best blue cod. It was won by Barry Bowden with a 2.5kg fish. Matt Dobson won a kilwell 200 plus surf rod for the best gurnard off the shore with a fish of 1.2kg.

The weigh in and prize giving were well attended this year at The Cutting sports bar in Miramar with MC John 'Mystery' Morrison in good form with co/host and organizer, Pete Lamb. Next year we are planning some musical entertainment to keep you amused while we are waiting for the results to come through.

Leading up to the comp there were a number of good snapper caught up to 14kg but just prior to the weekend a 50 knot southerly put the warmer water species off the bite as only 3 snapper were weighed in and no kingfish. I did hear of a few anglers getting 'dusted' by kingfish in the harbour and on the west coast.

On a more positive note the groper were abundant with 12 boats successful in catching either bluenose or groper. Tarakihi and bluecod were abundant as were kahawai. There were a number of elephantfish weighed in by boaties in the harbour. Forsyth Thompson took the heaviest tarakihi and kahawai fishing out from baring head and Ian Vickers caught the heaviest fish of the weekend, a 21kg groper out wide from Hunters bank.

Surfcasters struggled catching the normally abundant blue moki and spotty sharks. A 1.5mtr swell on the south coast probably affected those species. Heaviest moki came off Miramar wharf and the spotty shark from the wairarapa. Shore fisho Matt Dobson had the best of the tournament with most species, heaviest gurnard, runner up blue moki, spotted shark and 3rd placed cook strait sailfish (couta).

We will be running a "Brass monkey" fishing competition on July 15th and 16th and another "icebreaker" tournament on labour weekend. Details are on the website www.petelambfishing.co.nz. Sponsor and competitor enquiries are welcome
