The outer Hauraki is fishing close to it’s best, the Snapper are in excellent condition and on the bite big time. On a 4 day trip to the Barrier & Mok's last week we caught around 100 fish per day ranging from 1lb to 22lb with many over 14lb. The Kingfish were not big, maybe they are all at Coromandel. The Snapper, Kahawai and John Dory were plentiful and all in excellent condition. All fishing was done on the drift using Berkley soft plastic baits.
The best fish were caught at Great Barrier in the wash in close. The most consistent fishing was at the Mok’s, almost every cast receiving a strike. Once again this was in close to the rocks with a sharp drop off to 10-20 meters.
On the way home were fished Little Barrier finding good fish like it has towards the latter end of the season. Equal successes were attainted on the southern end of Kawau.
The water temperature is still very good so get out there before the cold snap arrives.
If you would like to give soft plastic baits a go, stop in to either of our Topcatch shops and ask for a free packet of Berkley soft plastic baits containing a selection of these very effective baits. Offer is while stocks last, one packet per customer. Only advertised here!

Rangitoto/Moututapu Islands
We had a customer catch 11 Snapper over 50cm, half a km North of the Rangi Lighthouse last Sunday. Dave and I were fishing Gardiner Gap where Rangi and Moututapu islands meet. We were in 5 metres of water in front of the cliff face on Moututapu.
Squid cast well back into the burley trail (no sinkers) worked best. We caught and released our limit, keeping some good sized snapper, lots of Kahawai to be had and we spotted the odd marauding Kingfish chasing Piper in our burley trail. A few weeks back we saw a horse of a Kingi that would have gone 25kg chasing small Kahawai in the same vicinity but as we had left the elephant guns at home we left it for you guys.
