Fishing Reports

Good fishing in the Rangitaiki river

I have had some great fishing in the Rangitaiki river over the past couple of weeks the best fish being a 6 1/2 Lb Rainbow caught by Greg Baumann on Thursday.   The best  fish are holding in the deeper pockets and are most easily reached by Czech nymphing. On the clearer days there has been some nice dryfly action. Best fly for this has been the Blue dun. The river is quite low at the moment so wading is easy and fish are moving further up into the riffles than you would normally expect. Good flies Olive bead head caddis, gold bead prince nymph and Iron blue dun.

Permits can no longer be obtained from the Redwoods Visitor Centre but are now obtainable from ISCL(Independent Security Consultants LTD), 66 Tarewa, Rotorua.

The Ngongotaha stream has been fishing very well after recent rain. I have heard reports of Trophy trout being caught. Last visit I had here there were very good numbers of fish. These are spawning fish so use glo bugs or similar for best results.

Taupo rivers have been tough. Some fish passed through all rivers after the recent rain but fishing results have been patchy since. Best rivers to target this time of year are the Waitahanui and the Hinemaiaia which will normally get the best early runs. Stream and river mouths at night have produced the best results for anglers. Fish are in good condition and good numbers are being caught.

Enjoy your fishing
