Fishing Reports

Central North Island

Its coming to the end of the summer season. That transition period when we wait for the spawning runs to start. Don't wait there is some superb fishing out there at the moment.

Rivers and streams  that I can report on.

Whanganui river - This river is holding good numbers of fish throughout. Browns have been moving their way up the river and is especially noticeable on the upper river. The fly that has caught the most fish has been the G/b olive caddis fished on a dry fly and nymph combination.

Rangitaiki river - Full of fish. A hint is to find a riffle and fish below. Fish tend to be easier to catch here. Between indicator and nymph use only a short leader not more than 4ft. Fish will also sit in the deeper holes, I use a Czech nymphing technique to get down to these fish. Dark flies with flash or caddis imitations at this time of year.

Mohaka river - Fish right through this but fish are not easy to catch. Larger fish have been quite spooky so stealthy techniques would be best.

Ngongotaha stream - Close to Rotorua, this is a great time of year to check out this stream, large numbers of fish are now running up this stream. Some of these fish are well over 5Lbs. First opportunity to get out the glow bugs. Don't expect to catch alot of fish unless experienced but good fun and just amazing to see so many fish in such a small stream.

Lake Kuratau - For someting different try this lake. Lots of fish here, best from a boat but offers some shoreline fishing. Stripping flies is normally the best technique and wooly buggers is a good starting point.

Taupo rivers - Early runs have started at the Waitahanui. Expect some fish in the Hinemaiaia and the Tauranga-Taupo aswell. Lots of small fish in all Taupo rives at the moment. Young fish from last years spawning. The next big flood will push these fish out in to the lake.  You can have alot of fun targeting these fish using a light rod in the riffly water. These fish are up to 1Lb and will sometimes take a dry fly or more often a small nymph. Be careful to release the fish properly as they are the future fishery.

Happy Easter and Tight lines.
