Fishing Reports

Gamefishing Update

The game fishing along the east and west coast still continues to be hot hot hot. Reports of fish still on the west coast continue, with the odd fish being hooked out of Raglan and the Manukau. One particular angler reports seeing huge numbers of strips off Piha beach in 60 mts of water. He remarked how it reminded him of being at the Whanganella Banks, with fish slicing through the water as they ravaged big schools of mackerel balled up on the surface. Unfortunately the weather has since closed in, but next day conditions are good for the west side it would be well worth a look.

The East coast still holds big numbers of stripeys. Charter skippers are expecting it to continue for the next few weeks or months. With so much bait and good water still on the coast the signs are for the fishing stay hot along the coast. The talk is a fabulous end to the season with big stripies roaming the Kings till very late in the season.

Ocean beach off tutukaka has had some big numbers of stripeys in it from the 30 to 80 meter mark. Huge schools of bait are hold up in this area, skippies and pilchards schooling on the surface as far as the eye can see.

The bream knolls have also held good numbers of stripeys with lots of bait and some excellent water holding the fish there, it just a matter of hanging in the area till its feeding time, and when it comes, its all on. Live baits are by far the best option and with so much bait about fresh skippies are easily caught and quickly deployed.

Nine Pin trench has been fishing well particular the northern end with boats still tangling with big blues and coming off second best on most occasions. Best trolling colors seem to be Hawaiian and black purple, with such food around the stripeys in the area are starting to pile on some condition very quickly, so are fat and aggressive.

The garden patch up to the 505 has started to fish well as well, big stripeys have being causing havoc to many boats, with multiple hook ups the norm. Again best colors seem to be Hawaiian. Black purple, and Aussie gold. The fish have been scattered in the area, but once you run over them it’s all on with the fish feeding well.

The northern area from Parengarenga to the cape seems to be pretty quiet, but as the fish and water start to move north will only get better, particularly with so much bait showing up in the area.

Till next week tight lines and bent rods,

Terry Williams King.
