Fishing ReportsDIVING OTAGO - JAN/FEBWell, isn't it ironic that the weather always influences our ability to participate in our magnificent sport yet no matter how rough the sea conditions are, once we have passed the 5 metre depth the tempest has gone and all is as per usual. So, needless to say, the high winds during January have put paid to a lot of diving activity offshore, although there are still many opportunities to be taken from the shore at The Mole, Karitane and Shag Point. Green Island and the Middle Reefs between Brighton Beach and there have dived well in the predominantly NE wind conditions. Visibility has not been anywhere near the 25 metres that it was in November but still good enough to spot the odd feeler. Hunting should be at its best now with the larger fish coming in to water as shallow as 5 - 10 metres. Tow Rock, to the north of the Dunedin swimming beaches, has also dived well and is sheltered enough from the North Easter if you get up there early enough in the morning. It is always productive and a fish during surface interval will reward you with blue cod and sometimes grouper. A few punters have been diving around Haast over the holiday period and experienced fantasic diving. Was the South Island's best kept secret until now, however local knowledge is vital to access the best sites and read the sea conditions so it will remain that way for years to come. We have a trip going to Stewart Island from 10 -13 February which requires a few more divers so if you are interested contact info@diveotago.co.nz for more details. The next report will be about this trip.
