As I write, the weather is perfect but the sea state not so good after a few days of 30+ knots of North East. Up until the arrival of the wind the diving has been superb with sites both North and South of the Peninsula offering good visibility up to 20 metres and excellent pickings.
In fact, at Danger Reef which is a couple of kilometres off Shag Point, divers found resting run crayfish on top of each other at about 30 metres. Danger Reef is a large area of macrocystis covered rock from 5 - 35 metres which offers fantasic fish life and oodles of small crayfish. Commercial "crayfisherpersons" are given a concession on the normal allowable tail size becaues of the presence of many small fish in this area. Not so the recreational diver!
The Akatore pinnacles were dived last week with excellent visibility and plentiful pickings. This area, 5 kilometres offshore from Taieri Mouth, offers magnificent diving as five pinnacles spear their way upward from the sea floor as part of the Akatore fault line. Everything here is big including rocks the size of houses. I have seen makos and stingrays here and of course there are the big blue cod - up to 4 kilos! Easy to get carried away as you can see.
Well, I had better not give too many secrets away.
Good Diving
