Fishing Reports

Latest around the gulf

The weather has has just been to die for, hot days, lots of sun and some reasonable fishing around the traps.  Some bite times have have been short and sharp , but those who have been patient have been rewarded. With water tempartures rising snapper will soon be in full spawning mode. With a reasonable weekend forecast for the coming weekend , it would be a prime opurtunity to get the boat on the water and slay some snaps....

WORM BEDS (RANGI TO TIRI): GPS MARKS  36 42 168      174 51 814
Even though the this particular bed has slowed down there are still plenty of fish being caught on it.  With the heavy boat traffic this area has had lately the fishing has slowed. A little stooge around the area should locate the fish, plenty of berley mid water (closer to the bottom if the tide is running) and strayline big strip baits down into slick.  The fish should bite as long as the berley is flowing , keep checking your berley to keep the fish biting.

RANGI (TIRI SIDE): GPS MARK 36 45 662     174 51 754
We have been fishing this area in the late evening with sift baits and lots of berley. It is the edge of of a drop off close into Rangi . The top of the foul is a shallow 7 mtrs but drops of quickly to 12mtrs with a good current running down the face on incoming or out going. The ledge definately fishes better on the out-going tide, and is best fished with big baits & no weight.  This area has been very good to us with soft baits as well with a number of good snapper succumbing to the rubber terrors.

The main thing is to berley hard and keep it going . Don't be surprised if you hook a big king here as well. They frequently visit this area but you will need some heavy tackle to stop them as they are usually xxxos size

MOTUROA ISLAND: GPS MARK  36 31 486     174  46  726
Area of mud just south west of the island that has been holding some good snapper.  Has been fishing best on the drift with ledger rigs or flasher rigs , cut mullet strip baits or squid heads have had best results.  The fishing has been so good here the boats that have fished here have had limit catches in record time with some good double figure figure fish as well.

THUMB POINT (WAIHEKE ISLAND)
Fishing towards Gannet from Thumb are a couple of deep pins that have started to hold good numbers of big kingfish , livebaits drifted deep or trolled on a down rigger will result in some serious fish . Fish no lighter than 15kg tackle and even then be prepared to be snotted by these green torpedos.

Catching livies can be harder than hooking the kings at the mo ,   A good supply of jacks and blue kohuru can be caught with a bit of patience at the top end of shag rock,  plenty of berley and small 4.5gram pink white jigs ( with single hook )  or mackeral sabikis.

The kings have been biting better on the last 2 hours of the incoming tide and have gone off the bite almost as soon as the tide stops.

Till next week good fishing!
