Fishing and weather hot in Wellington

Latest Report

As we move in spring, the weather has certainly been mild and the fish are biting well. For boaties the groper (hapuku) are almost due to return from spawning duties. There are plenty of schoolies around and a few bigger ones too. The bluenose and bass are abundant. The south coast has been good for bluecod, terakihi and gurnard. The west is starting to produce a few snapper as well as the normal, tarakihi, cod, trevs and gurnard.

For surfcasters the spotty sharks and gurnard are in good numbers and blue moki are a regular catch on sth coast beaches. The harbour continues to produce tarakihi, gurnard and elephantfish as well as good blue cod and kahawai.

On Sunday (2.10.05) we caught a heap of bluenose and some nice bass and puka. Ling, seal shark and hoki also featured in the catch. Last week John had some nice blue cod, tarakihi, gurnard and scallops down the Marlbourough Sounds and I was at Cape Runaway catching snapper and kingfish (well, Jim caught one kingfish). Locally there has been good inshore fishing on both coasts with plenty of school puka in the outer sounds.
