Deep Water Springtime Fishing

Deep water species were the focus of the last 3 weeks here for "Stingray", as I had a Japanese client here right through that period, whose goal was deep water fish , i.e Hapuka, Bluenose Bass, and winter (offshore) Kingfish. This client particularly wanted a decent bluenose, and had flown a long way with that as his primary goal. We fished offshore stuctures anywhere from local, out in front of Mercury Bay, to as far away as knolls down  in the Bay of Plenty out from Mayor and Motiti Islands. We carefully chose good weather windows, and did 2-3 day trips each time.

Results were excellent, with 4 bluenose to 15 kg, 3 Hapuka going 10,20, and 25 kg, several gemfish, and 1 bass, and 4 kingfish from 11 to 13 kgs. Some sloppier weather on a couple of days saw us getting lots of Terakihi , numerous snapper to 3 kg, big John Dory and plenty of scallops inshore.

Water temps are well up for this time of year, especially offshore.
