Fishing Reports

fishing hot in wellington

As we move through winter, the weather has certainly been mild and the fish are biting well. For boaties the groper (hapuku) are almost gone on spawning duties. the bluenose and bass are abundant at the trench.

In early July we caught 4 very nice hapaku. One at 130lb, one at 65lb and two at 60lb.

The snapper and kingfish have thinned out a bit although are still around. The south coast is good for bluecod, tarakihi and gurnard. The trench is producing some great bluenose and bass should be starting to turn up.

For surfcasters the spotty sharks and gurnard are in good numbers and blue moki are a regular catch on sth coast beaches. Shore fishing the west coast has been producing the odd snapper, trev and spotty sharks. The harbour continues to produce tarakihi, gurnard and elephantfish as well as good blue cod and kahawai.

25.8.05, caught a nice bag of bass and bluenose yesterday to 40lb at the trench, plenty of kahawai getting c aught by surfcaster in the harbour.

20.8.05 caught a modest stash of teris and blue cod at terkerei and wanui today and yesterday. the day befor that we caught a nice bag of bass to 35lb, and a few puka and bluenose.

18.8.05 caught a 68 and 25lb bass at the trench today as well a ling. bluenose a bit scares although i have heard there were quite a few caught last week
13.8.05 we are back in wgtn. had 2 good days catching big tarakihi, school puka and a few nice blue cod at turakurei. We are around owhiro bay/karori today, might even get a sniff at the trench today with the southerly change, a bit rough yesterday out there (30 knots)the surfcasting seminar was great, thanks to all who attended, a good crowd of about 20 enjoyed an informative night, thanks to steve the plasterer for his info on local kontiki fishing.
8.8.05 We finally got out to the 1000mtr dropoff for a broadie drift...see forums in wgtn charters for an update. The trench is firing good bluenose, the tarakihi fishing inshore on the west and south is very good, but the puka have gone spawning. Schoolies are still around the back of hunters, kapiti.
