Fishing Reports

Hauraki Gulf round-up

Well, the foul weather didn't last long , and with a good forcast for the next few days the fishing should be pretty dam good. I will be sunning myself in the Cook islands , hopefully wetting a fly on some bone fish , and dragging some metal lures for wahoo for the next few weeks.

THE SHALLOWS OF RANGI
Has for some strange reason still been producing some wicked catches in the shallows.  In particular, the area from Rangi light to Gardners Gap, big baits floated down a good berley trail have resulted in some wonderful snapper fishing. The fish seem to be biting best in the late afternoon, and with the days getting longer as day light savings approaches, an early finish in the office should result in some good solid snapper for dinner

MOTUORO ISLAND
At the northen end of the island is a breaking rock with a small bit foul running to the west from there. Large schools of slimeys have been schooling on the foul , and the kings have showing up to feed on them. The hardest part is landing livies here, as the kings nail them before you can get them to the boat, the kings are not big averaging 20lb, but on light tackle they are a ball. Drifting livies over the foul is the best way to get good clean hook ups. Once hooked power away to deaper water before they foul you up. A good idea would be to get livies first as the frustration of having stolen baits will soon get to you.

JIMMIES FOUL
In my last report i reported jimmies was fishing well,  sevral boats have reported some great catchs there at present, using big XXXXL baits and livies, plenty of double figure fish have graced the decks of boats recently. Jimmies is a small bit of foul north east of Horn rock , the gps marks are as follows 36.14 south 175.4 east. The foul runs towards miners head on the barrier, remember big baits big fish here , try drifting the area as well.

MAORI ROCK (MOKIHINAUS )
Sevral deep pins out the back of Maori Rock have been holding large numbers of small Puka and some XXXXL kingfish. Fishing two hook hapuka ledger rigs with a bait on one hook and a livie on the other have produced a mixed bag of good table fish. Nice eating size puka ( up to 30lb ) and some big kingies. The biggest i have heard of late was 27 kg , with plenty more fish busting them off, a good supply of big squid baits and and livies will produce a good season of big fish.

Well, good luck to all , look forward to hearing how the fishing has been when I get back in a couple of weeks

Regards,

Terry
