Hauraki Gulf Report

Well the weather continues to be the major decider for most trips of late, and with the building swell recently on the east coast, a surf board was required for most areas on the outer gulf! However some excellent fishing has been had for those who managed to get out.

GREAT BARRIER
Kingis have been schooling inside Tryphena harbour rounding up schools of blue macks and feeding them selves into a frenzy. These fish were being caught on jigs and livies, and there were some great fish (>25kg) if you managed to get a big livie in the water. The fish average seems to be around 40lbs and were in great condition

ANCHORITE ROCK
Fishing is supreme on the deeper outer reef, with good sized snaps up to and over 6lb, big fresh live or dead jacks were the go or big pillies. Use big hooks (size 8/0 ) and just enough weight to get to the bottom, the fish are biting steadily all in the late afternoon with a limit had very quickly, with plenty of bait in the area and the blow about to come , will be a prime spot for big snaps in the next week or two

KAURI POINT
Still good snapper fishing here, with the bad weather due for the weekend , this spot should offer good shelter from most conditions, the snapper have been feeding well here on the out-going tide. Use an aussie strayline sinker above the swivel with a long trace for best results, but a snapper snatcher or whippa snapper will no doubt work just as well.

ROCKY BAY
Usually a spot we use for catching bait when targeting kingies, but has been producing legal snapper and good trevally recently. Drifting works best , if moving too fast try using a drogue, surface berley gets the trevs going , but if you get a bit deeper with your unweighted baits a good pan sized snapper will often be the reward

In Close around the Bays
Off the reefs around Bean Rock and St Heliers at change of light – in close (2-3m of water) using a strayline rig and running a good berley trail. Good fish reported up to ~5kg. read more in the reports section of www.fishing.net.nz discussion forums (you'll need to register if you haven't already but it only takes a moment.

TightLines and good fishing,

Terry.
