Fishing Reports

Weekly Round-Up

The fishing is still hot in the shallows, and with good sized kahawai and trevally making for a good by-catch on the snapper.

KAWAKAWA BAY
Just literally 2 mins from the boat ramp, head out from the ramp towards Sandspit passage , when you’re about half way over stop in about 4.5mtrs of water, set your berley and watch the fish come aboard, best fishing is from about 3pm onwards as the sun starts to head down on the horizon, the fish are not big , but are great eating fish, nice and fat and around 3 to 4lb. best rig is an aussie strayline rig two fixed hooks tied to 40lb trace, slide a small 1/2 once bean sinker on your main line then tie your swivel, attach you leader to the swivel. Best baits are sprat and pillies lots of berley

THOMPSONS POINT
Had a great session on trevs here on Tuesday, tried out the new mussell kina berleys , after being in the water only  ten minutes we had trevs all around the boat , with light tackle they were great fun, averaging around 2 to 3 kgs. Best bait was mussels tied on to a small 3/0 circle hook with two small split shot attached about 1/2 meter from the hook

ORAKEI WHARF
If you like fresh bait or even to eat piper , Orakei wharf is a good spot to catch piper, use a small fine berley , use a small black magic fly hook on a light spin rod , slide a quill float about 2 mtrs up from the hook and hold in place with small split shot. you will need to flick this away from the berley to get away from the sprats that will be attracted.  watch your quill float & when it pulls under give a short sharp jerk of the rod to set the hook.

CHANNELL ISLAND
Big kingies are starting to mass on the side reef , with good size fish up to 25kgs common, big livies trolled slowly on a downrigger or with some weight are the best way to get a hook up, heavy tackle will be required to get them away from the reef .

GAMEFISHING
The season is all but done and dusted along the coast, however there are still the odd fish popping up around north cape. The three kings however is firing on all cylinders, with the fish again meat balling on the surface , this can be hot action and has resulted in multiple fish hook ups, the fish have been feeding on both lures and baits which means good fishing all day when looking for the bait on the bank.

The Middlesex bank has some good water on it with plenty of bait , however it does not seem to have the same attraction to the billfish with the king bank holding the most numbers of marlin. with the weather now on the decline and the cold winds and lows out numbering the highs good planning must be taken if heading there

I’ll have an early report next week due to boat show, hope fully will see you there , 'till then tight lines!
