HORN ROCK
Monster kings here at the moment but with the weather on the turn it has been a hard spot to get to, but with the odd pearler thrown in those who have ventured here have been rewarded. Big livies fished under balloons on the drift & fish the edge closest to little barrier with a big livie.
STANMORE BAY
Fish in the evening in the shallows less than 5 mins from the beach. Good snapper in the shallows. The fish are in water off only 15ft and are hungry. Best baits piper and pillies. Two hook strayline rig with small bean sinker with lots of berley and your away most guys reporting there limits of good fish after an hour.
SECOUND BAY (PONUI ISLAND)
I said it last week and it still goes on, if you want a feed of johnnys this is the place to be with large numbers of johnys still there. Single hook ledger rig with a live small jack mackreal on the top of the tide or when the tide is slow.
RAKINO CHANNEL
The fish that were around billy goat point have moved into slightly deeper water. Head out of Rakino channel towards Whangaparoa and drift around the 19mtr mark. Good schools of fish here. Fished best on a snapper terror with mullet.
SQUARE TOP ISLAND
With the weather starting to cool an early start to the Top on a good day is very rewarding. Reading through my diary it was at this time the last few years in between duck shooting days we had some exceptional snapper fishing here. As you come to Square Top on the Jackson side a pin comes up from 46mtrs to 19 mtrs. Fish the inside patch between it and Square Top. Not a place for light tackle - use big baits and heavy gear and hang on! Big skippie fillets being your best bit.
NO 6 BOUY (MANUKAU HARBOUR)
If you a gurnard lover this is a good spot for gurnad at moment. With carrots averaging 1.5kg coming aboard readly. Skippie pieces attached to a three hook tarakhi rig ,with a sinker at the start of the rig and the end to lay it flat. You will be well rewarded if you fish the incoming tides.
GAME FISHING
There are still fish on the coast with scott tindale on onikiwa landing 2 striped marlin in the last week out from the back of the nights. Both were good fish well into the 100kg mark and with strong numbers of marlin at the kings a last look well worth a visit. The bait has been meat balling on the King bank and some hot action has been had bait fishing. Marlin are taking baits right at the transom of most boats.
HAPUKA
Locklin reef of the bottom end of the nights has had some good numbers of small puka show up. A twin hook dropper rig squid baits offering great rewards with red snapper and tarakhi also showing. With the water starting to cool the puka will come into the shallow reefs with the deep foul between simpsons rock and the mokihinaus. Worth a few drifts...just need the weather.
