Ryders Trout Fishing @ Lake Aniwhenua Lodge

Summer finally came with a vengence. The day temperatures in the valley have been in the 30+ degree. This has made for geat dry fly over the past weeks. Naturally the Cicada has been No1.

All water levels are at what you'd expect for this time of year. Low but real good for the fishing. Have had nice clean water for some time now.

The lower Rangitaiki is producing some of the biggest river fish we've seen in those locations for a long time. They are in excellent condition.

The Whirinaki has been fishing well. Sight fishing has been fantastic.

Lake Aniwhenua had a few up & down days but generally continues to fish really well. Some of the problem was the water suddenly dirtying for no apparent reason. We finally found out that kilometres up river a farmer was having work done to regain access to one of his paddocks. This had been cut off when the Rangitaiki diverted course in the July flood. these repairs are finally completely so we shouldn't encounter this problem again.

Nymphing the lake has become the preferred fly fishing method now that the temperature is so hot. The hatching insects are providing the trout with their daily diet. Still heaps of good sight fishing to be had here.

Cheers,

Joan Ryder
