Fishing Reports
Barrier, Kawau - Charter Connection Report
Howdy All.
After successfully filling up my 4 year old PC with all sorts of programs and tools, it died. After a good nuke and reload, we are up and running again so I must pass on my apologies to those who were not contacted by email promptly.
Into what has been happening around our neck of the woods.
We have just returned from our first Barrier trip of the winter where we concentrated our efforts around the Miners Head and Miners reef area for a couple of days. To be quite honest we found the fishing to be a little on the slow side and have put that down to the full moon and big tides. We did however get a couple of early season, Hapuka and Snapper to about 6kg. These were the highlights but the usual haul of Snapper and reef fish such as Terahiki, Golden Snapper and the like were also secured. Small Kingfish were also released from Green Rock out side Fitzroy. But as is normal for the time of year we had to shelter on the last day from the weather and ended up back at Kawau Island for the final night. The crew think the trip was jinxed after a number of bananas were brought on board by one angler who knew no better. He should do now! I thank the rest of the crew for their patience and restraint. These trips are a lot of fun and we will be doing a heap of them to various locations around the Gulf with our next to Cape Colville coming up soon. The date will depend on numbers and when my good lady has the baby. About a month away I would guess. Want to know more, then give us an email or call.
We had a few good trips out behind Tiri prior to that but have found this area to be a little patchy and crowded to say the least. Shearers’ Rock, the Black Buoy and the surrounding foul all produced fish until some mug anchored behind us and spooked the fish! This was happening on a daily basis and if the fish weren’t sick of having an anchor dropped on the dinner table, we were. The area of foul around Shag Rock put on a good show a few times but again the crowds slowed the action down.
Other than that we have been camped out in the Kawau area enjoying less crowded conditions and good fishing. The 10kg Tournament held at Pah Farm on Kawau, was a great event as usual. We spent the 2 days of fishing time around the northern end of the island and out near Flat Rock. Congratulations to Greame Truman for picking up 8th place with a 6 kilo Snapper only hours before final weigh in. It is a great venue at Pah Farm and we use the bunk room accommodation for some of our stay aways. It is only $20 per head and great for groups wanting onshore lodgings with restaurant and bar facilities. Give us a call for 2-day trips to Flat Rock and Takatu.
Because the fishing has been so good up that way I cannot really report on how our other haunts have been fishing, as we have not had to search much further. In saying that I know the area out behind Tiri in about 40-45m will be holding a few fish as will the top of Coromandel and its’ surrounding foul. I love this part of the country for fishing but find it best when the tides are small. It makes it a bit more manageable to fish, when you don’t have to use so much weight to get a bait to stay near the bottom. The foul outside Port Jackson and around Square Top, are places to have a look at this time of year.
Some hot news straight off the press is the introduction of TEREHU to our full time fleet. TEREHU is a smaller version of MATANGI with good electronics and gear. She is now fully set up for all our trips and having her in the fleet means that no one has to miss out on a good days fishing. We can also offer really good deals for inter boat competitions (great for corporate groups) and large groups wanting to get out on the water. We have also secured other vessels to make sure we have all the bases covered. These include a 50ft powercat for larger groups, corporates and anglers who want maximum room and speed out to Little Barrier, Cape Colville and Great Barrier for the day or overnight. We also have a 38ft Launch suitable for smaller groups wanting extended trips or day trips around the Gulf.
Give us a call for more information on upcoming trips or what we can do for you. Get out there and go fishing before they (DOC) lock the whole place up in Marine Reserves!
