Fishing Reports

THE CHARTER CONNECTION REPORT

Bag limits of Snapper were not uncommon earlier in the month especially from some of the high current channels around the Gulf. Rakino, although not fishing as well as Motuihe, has fished quite well for us on a number of occasions on the way to Motuihe. Snapper up to about 5kg were the norm and on one occasion everybody had a limit bag within 2 hours! The other channels in this area have also fished well but you did need the tide to be running before they would come on and this often meant drift fishing or just sitting it out. I prefer to sit it out as it helps to get established in an area so the fish tend to hang around. The only problem with fishing these areas is the crowds. We counted over 150 boats anchored in one of these channels the other day and cringed every time another boat dropped anchor right behind us, despite desperate hand signals and verbal directions to park beside us rather than on the fish and scattering the school. A couple of boats even followed us around when we moved only to do the same uneducated anchoring again! Tests the patience that’s for sure. Not being one for the crowds has seen us fishing another few locations with pretty good results also. The areas of foul around Flat Rock, Tiri Channel, the islands south of Kawau and a few spots we have out on the sand in about 40-50 metres have all been fishing well. I have noticed the Tiri area has slowed a wee bit and the size of fish is also down, so am preferring to fish other locations when we can, although in saying that there are a few reasonable Kingfish in this area at the moment, especially near the points and outcrops. Shag Rock and the reefs around Shearers and the Black Buoy are not fishing as well as I would have expected for the time of year, but the change of light with a good burley trail could be the go. Wont be today though as it is not a nice place to be in 35 knots of easterly! The Charter Connection Team fished the Bays Club Contest last weekend and enjoyed pretty good fishing in reasonable conditions. Thanks to team members, Graham (Trevally magnet) Truman and Peter (sleepy) Hunt for their efforts over the weekend picking up the average weight prizes. Special thanks to The Bays Club and to The Bait Station, for making it such a great event. I think a 9kg fish won overall but alas it wasn’t ours. We could only manage Snapper to around the 5kg mark despite our efforts. That’s fishing. Don’t forget you can give someone the gift of fishing for birthdays and other occasions. We do trip vouchers as gifts and are finding these to be quite popular. We can also arrange corporate trips for large and small groups aboard a variety of vessels including a large, modern powercat. It doesn’t have to be fishing either as we have available a range of cruising options, full catering and even a fully qualified dive instructor. We even offer Maritime Education including the popular Coastguard courses. If it’s on the water we do it! It is a busy calendar this month with Easter upon us and then a short week with ANZAC Day the following Friday. I see there is even Secretary’s Day on the 16th.. We have spaces available over Easter and at this stage ANZAC Day is still available. Give us a call or email us at deepsea@clear.net.nz or 09 424 0607. You can reach Damian on the water on 025 2446346. Tight lines- Damian- THE CHARTER CONNECTION We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act but a habit.
