Fishing Reports

Eastern Bay of Plenty

What a roller coaster of emotions this spring has delivered! One week we can't go wrong, the next it's back to the doldrums. Seems like we are definite victims of the three W's - Wind (plenty of), Westerly flow and a continuation of Winter. Hopefully we will kick all three bad habits eventually but it doesn't appear to be this month. Batten down the hatches for awhile yet. Inshore
Real mixed bag here. Some success stories in amid the tales of woe. More of the latter just lately. Terakihi still out number snapper and are the way to go if you want the best chance at a "feed". Some good reports from the Ohiwa entrance with some snapper up to 15 pounds among the smaller fish. Good catches of gurnard just off the Heads at Kohi Point. Matata also kicking out mixed, although subdued, catches of late. Offshore
White Island and area has gone topsy turvey the last week. After a brilliant week we have now returned to pretty tough times. Kingis have become very hard at all spots with a few rats (to 10kgs) doing most of the pulling with the off fish to 25kgs. Near shore reef fish have developed lockjaw as well with very reduced catches compared to 10 days ago. The only positive sign has been on the hapuka/bass stakes in medium depths. Bluenose, the previous staple in deep water, have largely shut down. The mid depths (150-220m) which have been devoid of life for many weeks have finally fired. A good number of hapuka (10-25kgs) along with some nice bass (50-60k's) have rewarded the triers at long last. Who knows what next week may bring?!? Ranfurly
Only token effort there recently with such poor conditions. A mixture of hapuka, kingis and snapper (East Cape) but nothing earth shattering. Strong winds, large swell and big currents have made fishing here very difficult. Summary
If ever this was the case, its "watch this space" for the next turn of events. With lots more wind in the foreseeable future don't expect much!
