Fishing Reports

Any day now!

It has been a while since our last report, what with the winter maintenance and the fishing, taking up most of our time. The weather has been it usual blustery self over the past month and it has been making getting to the fish a bit harder. It is typical for the wind to spring up from the south-west this time of year and it is not helping the water temp to climb as fast as we all would like. Great for the yacht racing though. Any day now the schoolies will be here and we mean “any day now”! There is the odd real nice snapper showing up around the Tiri area and further north around the back of Kawau Island.Fit, fat and full of fun, but they are not around in great numbers or schooled up yet, but they are here checking out the summer holiday home before the rest of the tribe get into town. The back of Kawau was our destination last weekend for Jonathan and his group on an overnighter. Friday was windy and a stop at the top of Tiri on the way up to Kawau produced only small Snapper and Kahawai, while we waited for the wind to settle down. A lot of small Snapper greeted us when we got up to Kawau, but was improving towards the end of the day just off the North Eastern end of the island. A mixed bag of Snapper and Trevally for the afternoon and we were off to Pah Farm Fishing Lodge for the groups accommodation and an evening of wining and dining. Saturday dawned still and calm, so it was off to the Terahiki Patch for a session on the reef species out there. Fishing in about 40m of the wet stuff with the tide ripping out, meant using about 8-10 ounces to get to the bottom without fishing 200m behind the boat and off the reef. It didn’t take long before the first Snapper was dispatched into the slurry. More followed before the Terahiki started to appear in numbers as the tide eased away. With the Terahiki were the Golden Snapper and we secured half a dozen of these crimson tasties before slack water saw us head south and out of the increasing wind. Back at Whangaparaoa the Snapper were not as cooperative and we headed for home after adding a couple more to the tally. A few other trips spring to mind one of which sticks well in the memory banks. Shearers Rock behind Tiri produced good snapper to about 4kg at the end of what had, until then, been a hard day. Straylining whole pilchards and lolago squid down a fine berley trail as the tide crept up the rocks was the ticket and the small group pulled them in one after another, for about 40 minutes, before it just went dead. No reason we could see, but it died. What goes on down there would really surprise us all I’m sure. There were also a few good Trevally in the box that trip too. Last week some little freak sent us a virus in an email resulting in a couple of old emails being sent from our PC to a number of addresses in our contacts list. We apologise for this mongrels work and can offer help to those who have contracted the Bug Bear virus. Ours was sorted out in an hour or so, by one of our clients to whom we are greatly thankful.
