Fishing Reports

HO HUM - BUT HERE THEY COME!

Despite a patch of really nice spring weather, the fishing on the whole has been pretty slow. It is typical for September to be hard fishing but it is also typical for the odd surprise to show up. The Tiri area has been hard going with your only real chance being at the change of light or with a good burley trail going. Shearers Rock is a spot for this style of fishing and has produced a few nice fish for us but not in any numbers. The outgoing tide seems to fish better than the flooding tide at the moment and the change of light would be best if you can get that happening together. The deeper foul further out from Tiri has produced a few fish too, but again it is only a few. The Tiri Passage has had its' moments but generally we are finding it pretty slow fishing in there too. There is heaps of sign around but the fish are either not feeding or they are all throw backs. We did score a few real good John Dory in there the other day which made up for the lack of Snapper. There are still a few good Trevally lurking around in the weeds too, but we have not caught nearly half as many as this time last year. Seems there is a lot more, smaller Snapper around too. Kawau is still producing a few fish, but again the numbers have dropped right away. It is along way to come home with not much in the slurry so I have stopped fishing up there for now. It will improve drastically in the very near future as will most of our "patch" as the school season begins. The big jacks will soon be here casing out the place and there is plenty of good signs indicating a great season. Whales, Dolphins, big schools of Anchovies and Pilchards are all in the Gulf and are telling us there is a heap of feed around. How much does a pod of Whales eat in a day! Tried fishing out on the mud the other day just in case there was a few Snapper moving around, but there wasn't. There was a big Gurnard and a few Skates but no Snapper for our efforts so we moved onto the hard stuff again. The sounder was showing a massive meatball in mid water, with a few, scatchy looking marks underneath. These turned out to be Barracuda, all of which were about a foot long. Still no Snapper in it though and we shifted to the weeds for a strayline and a burley trail. Zilch again! Spent the day moving around and trying to pick up what we could from the bricks. Gulf Harbour is the closest marina to some of the best spawning grounds for Snapper and often in the season we get decent fishing within 10 minutes from the dock! There is secure parking with video surveillance and plenty of amenities in the marina itself. The new motorway has really cut the drive from the City in half and a lot more anglers are choosing to leave from Gulf Harbour, rather than travel to the Gulf from the City. We have spaces available for casuals though out the season and also have a list of dates for casual anglers that we can email or mail to you if you are interested. There are some weekend dates available still but you will need to book if you want one of those as they are going fast. Get your social club or work group together for a trip. These can be a team building exercise or just a good old fashioned day out. We have the BBQ for hire or can cater a packed lunch, supply bait, rods, tackle and of course, fish.
