Fishing Reports

Making The most of mid winter fishing

Canterbury has approximately eight clubs active in surfcasting. Each event is for a trophy or shield, with the five dollar entry fee divided into different categories as prize money. Canterbury has at times challenging surf so events are held at different locations around Canterbury with up to one hundred anglers participating. This is the report from the Amberley Competition. SURFCASTING
Parked under the trees waiting for the host club to arrive, Joe, Ray, Robin and myself discussed where we were going to fish for the day. Looking at the sea, the breaker was fairly calm with just enough colour to ensure there may just be a few fish as Amberley is notorious for often having no fish, which can make the four hours fishing time allowed, extremely boring. Up for grabs on the 1st of September was the Jack Rodmell Memorial Trophy As always, the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club Fishing Section team put on a fair competition, the weather came along to the party also with warm conditions and a breeze strong enough to assist with casting without being annoying. From the first cast, dogfish started biting well and in the two hours to twelve o'clock, most had caught their six fish quota. Despite a large variety of baits oozing their scents out into Pegasus Bay, no one managed to hook a big one. With the dogfish being approximately the same weight, catching a seven gill shark or a skate will change the nature of the weigh in. There is still a long way to go in the season and anything can happen from here on. THE RESULTS
TEAMS 1ST: CANTERBURY ANGLERS CLUB 31.40KG 2ND: SOUTH CHCH CLUB 31.35KG 3RD: WOOLSTON CLUB 30.70KG Yes it was close, but we were happy to take the win from some extremely good fishermen in a tough competition. Young Sam Chidgey did well on the day with a 2nd placing in the juniors competition. It was a good day out for the team, and the Club. The team is looking forward to the next competition with the expectation of larger fish moving in as the weather improves. The team finished the day wishing Ray Worsfold all the best for his up coming operation and hoped to see him soon, back in action. REGARDS RUSS CHIDGEY
