FISHING REPORT - WELLINGTON – 1.8.02
Pete Lamb - www.petelambfishing.co.nz
Over all the weather has made fishing tough over the last 3 weeks. The school holidays were good but since then it has been very cold and many fishos have ‘flagged it away’. During the week there has been a few good days and have heard good reports of bluenose at the trench and puka at fishermans rock.
It is a good time of the year to buy a boat or some new fishing equipment, as retailers are keen on a sale at this time of the year. Generally the industry is very quite. Fresh water fishos would dispute this and whitebait season is just around the corner.
My instructional fishing courses have been well attended over last term and this term with around 70 participants in 4 classes. It’s an 8 x 2hr lesson course run on all you need to know on salt water fishing – beginners to advanced. One lesson a week run at local high schools around the area (community education programs). If you would like to know more send me an email.
West Coast: The groper fishing has been an on – off affair. This is probably a combination of bad weather and the fish disappearing to spawn. The three spots I keep hearing about are - Fishermans rock, out wide from the 78mtr rise and out wide from hunters.
Haven’t heard of any monsters caught lately, just good 20 – 40bers.
Some good catches of big blue cod at hunters bank – 60 – 80mtrs of water. Have heard rumors of warehou but no actual catches. Normally you expect to get good trevally and warehou in the winter at hunter but the last couple of seasons have been disappointing.
Good tarakihi fishing down makara way, especially at the fenceline between boom and makara – 25mtrs depth
Have heard of some big buck crays out on the mud. Females still in egg.
I see the commercial pots up and down the coast at the mo.
South coast: Very good inshore fishing for blue cod tarakihi and gurnard along with heaps of kahawai and a few big blue macks.
We have had a couple of nice kingis inshore fishing at terakerei head recently. One at 20lbs the other at 10. Quite unusual for this time of the year. Excellent blue cod fishing down there but we haven’t had the normal xos tarakihi. Stax of kahawai.
We have had some good gurnard fishing off the back of lyall bay.
The trench has been good for bluenose and should fire well for bass as well over the next few months. A few puka around. Best catches at sinclair/karori or in palliser. The other side of the trench (the place they call hell) will probably still fire the odd good catch of puka at this time of the year.
The big numbers come back on in October.
Harbour: I believe pillies are still getting caught off the overseas terminal of late as well as a few warehou. Queens wharf also produces warehou after dark on squid baits with berley at this time of the year. The press have reported some snapper over the eastborne side of the harbour but I’m not too sure how recent it was. Plenty of red cod and barracouta around.
Surfcasting:
The best fishing has been in palliser bay, especially the western side of lake ferry – ‘the spit’. Spotted sharks (lemonfish) are the target. They take crab baits, fight like shit and taste good as well. An average fish will take 20mtr bursts of line off your reel and they have been the most commonly caught ‘ quality fish’ by the local ‘staunch’ surfcasting fraternity.
Red cod, kahawai and spiney dogs have been raging and also the odd salmon from the ferry river mouth.
Castlepoint and white rock have both been producing nice gurnard, especially around the turn of light.
The local moki fishermen are largely retired for the winter. From past experience numbers of moki can still be caught in the winter, especially around the terawhiti area.
Makara point (south) is a good spot for a winter trev and a few tarakihi – on a rising tide after dark and boom rock is a good bet for a warehou and a few tarakihi but watch out for a potential plague of blindies this time of the year.
