West coast: Very good groper fishing out wide with consistant cathes of large fish and numbers. Fishermans rock, 78mtr rise, back of hunters have produced good fishing as well as the nomal makara and mana spots. If you look at the wgtn bathymetric chart you will see ‘ dropoffs’ ‘squigles’ anuthing over 100mtrs produces groper. The two depths I have done in are 130mtrs and 200 mtrs.
Some very big snapper have come in over the last few weeks. Mainly from water depth of 50 – 70 mtrs. Places off makara, boom, verns, hunters and pukerua bay all fire spasmodically. Have heard of numbers of snapps from the plimmerton reef as well. Two weeks ago we got 4 snaps and a john dory in amoungst the tarakihi at the makara fenceline fishing 25mtrs. Some nice big blue macks have been around and heaps of kahawai. No reports of warehou yet, shouldn’t be long.
South coast: Very good inshore fishing for blue cod tarakihi and gurnard along with heaps of kahawai and a few big blue macks.
A good run of kingfish has occurred over the last month, one boat landed 6 small ones off the back of island bay
The trench has been good for bluenose and should fire well for thos and bass over the next few months. A few puka around. Best catches at sinclair/karori or in palliser.
Harbour: kahawai fever has been present over the last month. Pillies have been caught regularly off the overseas terminal and a few kingis have been caught, most lost. Some nice snaper over eastborne way up to 18lbs and gurnard down
