Wellington Fishing Report 1/4/02
WEST COAST - OHAU POINT TO KAPITI
boat
The snapper fishing has improved a bit lately. We caught half a dozen or so the other day at the wairaka rise in about 50 metres. I have heard of some good catches up and down the coast. The predominant north westers have improved the kingfish and snapper fishing. they have made it tough for the fishing competitions though. The Plimmerton comp was fishable both days in early march but was ‘character building’ with a residue nth west swell and medium northerly blowing on the first day and good until stiff southerly coming in miday on the 2nd day. heaviest snapper on that comp was only 4.9kgs , kingfish to 19kg, groper to 23kg.
We had a good run of john dory in march. bagging 3 nice fish on the plimmerton reef one morning. 2 took live blue cod and the third was taken on pilly underneath birds and kahawai working.
The groper fishing out wide has been good. I have heard of good numbers but not big fish down makara way. Fishermans rock has been on and off. a 129lb puka was caught out there in late feb/early march. The back of the 78mtr rise has been on and off as well. The weather has been a good conservation measure this season.
There has been a bit of a run of snapper at hunters bank. The usual big tarakihi in 80 - 100 mtrs and some good kingis for those anglers Some big ones as well.
Have heard of a few trevs getting caught but not a patch on previous seasons
shore fishing
A run of big gurnard south of makara was a pleasant surprize for members of wsac - I beleive Te-Ikamaru bay was the hotspot. Some fishos took 6 or more nice gurnard in a session.
There have been a few snapper taken north and south of Titahi bay. Best fish was a little over 2kgs. Havn’t heard of any kingfish taken off the shore this season yet. Don’t give up LBGers, the next 2 months are prime time for a capture.
Have had no reports from Boom or Wairaka rock this season. There must have been some good catches there but no-one is saying anything (at this stage anyway)
WELLINGTON HARBOUR
Boat
We had a cach of 10 snapper near Ward Island the other day but most of them were undersize. Have heard of a 9kg snap taken at barrets reef and a 7.5kg one taken off shelly bay.
SOUTH COAST - CAPE TERAWHITI TO CAPE PALLISER
Shore
Long beach has been producing some nice blue cod and moki from recent reports. one angler caught 3 legal moki there not so long ago. The stream on the far end has been a bit soft and has caught one some 4x4’s.
Boat
Nicholsons trench - deepwater fishery. The trench never seems to fish well when the water is dirty. The only exception is bass and ling, if they are around. We have had some good catches of bluenose and ling with a few bas and groper thrown in for good measure. I heard of a couple of big bass taken on the otherside of the trench - 25 - 35kg and also bluenose to 25kg there as well.
Inside Palliser bay, 5 mile reef and sinclair to karori light are all places that produce groper at this time of the year. Terakerei and the other side (heaven and hell) have only produced groper spasmodically this season.
