The New Zealand Recreational Fishing Council

The NZRFC is a Council made up of delegates representing a National (6) and Regional (9) Associations plus Club representatives and Branch delegates (9) elected to represent the public sector members. The public sector members consist of Corporate and individual persons who have paid a membership fee.

The Council has the following objectives:

  • To advocate and represent by any means the interests of any non-commercial marine fishers, New Zealand wide.
  • To promote and educate all aspects of non-commercial fishing and its attendant activities throughout New Zealand.
  • To promote, manage and participate in the protection of, and scientific study of, the aquatic environment, aquatic life, fish and their habitats.
  • To act in a manor consistent with the Te-Tiriti-O-Waitangi 1840 and the objectives of the National Policy for Recreational Fishers as adopted by NZRFC.

Northland - North of a line from and including Dargaville to Waipu

Auckland - From the Kaipara Harbour to Port Waikato on the West Coast across to Cape Colville including the Firth of Thames, Hauraki gulf and Great Barrier Island

Bay of Plenty - From Taupo to Cape Colville excluding the Firth of Thames to East Cape and inland to Taupo

Waikato - From Port Waikato to Tairua Point inland to Taupo and north to but not including the Firth of Thames

Taranaki - From Taupo across to Tirau Point south along the West Coast to Wanganui back to Taupo

Kayaking becoming mainstreamGisborne/Hawkes Bay - From Taupo to East Cape then South along East coast to Cape Turnagain then inland to Taupo

Central - Remaining East and West Coast of the North Island and South of Taupo

Nelson Marlborough - Top South Island north of a line from and including Westport to Kaikoura

Southern - All of the South Island except Nelson/Marlborough Branch

The Council holds an Annual General Meeting and Conference annually in the month of July. The Venue varies and the meeting is hosted by one of the member organisations. Prior to each conference nominations are called for the election of delegates to represent the public sector members. This election process occurs between the months of March to June each year. The persons elected (for a one year term) take up office at the following Annual General Meeting. Nominations are also called for the positions of President and two Vice Presidents for election for a one year term plus for replacement Executive Board members elected for a two year term. The Officers and Board members control the Council and carry out duties as allotted by the Council.

Lana with a Matauri Bay snapperThe Council is involved in many issues affecting recreational fishers plus in the processes of management and consultation carried out by the Government. The Council is recognised by the Government as representing the recreational fishers and public (by default) as it is the only body fully representing all types of fishers in NZ. The processes and consultation involved includes Stock Assessment, Research Planning, Total Allowable Catch (TAC) & Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) Setting, Management and Regulation Reviews, Cost Recovery, Act Review and Select Committee representation. This involves the Council in upward of 80 days of meetings per year.

The Council has no paid staff. It has an Honorary Secretary and Financial Controller, and is represented at various forum by representatives appointed as required. For more information about the RFC, please visit the RFC web site.
