NZ Fishing News July 2010 issue

25 June 2010

While the icy cold winder weather has descended upon us, there are still plenty of opportunities to get out there for a fish.

Sure, he conditions often dictate the location, but the keen (or hardy) anglers are still enjoying some good action.

In this issue we have three articles that will be of interest to soft bait fishers, regardless of their level of expertise. Brett Rathe has been at the forefront of soft bait fishing since its introduction and many anglers have been introduced to this exciting form of fishing aboard his Sandspit based charter vessel Assassin. Brett likes nothing more than to get in close and fish the ‘wash’, the white water created where the swells touch base with the land. His first contribution to this magazine starts with a story on wash fishing.

Staying on the soft bait theme, both Sam Mossman and Mark Kitteridge look at two technical aspects of this style with their articles on drag rigs and improving control when presenting the lure.

This month Adam Clancey gets back ton the basics of rock fishing while saltwater fly fisher Craig Worthington checks out the opportunities to be found around the Hokianga harbour.

For the gamefishers, Worthington Jnr – Josh – highlights to challenges of targeting bluefin tuna off the Mainland’s west coast while further inland Peter Langlands gives us his 10 best trout spots. Staying with freshwater, Silver Flies team member Aaron West presents the second part in his Tongariro nymphing series.

This month’s Reader Story comes from Cushla Brinkley who, with a bunch of mates, did a multi-day charter aboard Rick Pollock’s Pursuit and had a ball.

The above are just some of the features. There is not enough space to highlight all the regular columns such as greg Morton’s Fair Chase that takes a look at Poronui Ranch’s hunting and fishing while freediver Darren Shields checks out some deformed fish that seem no worse for wear.
