NZ Fishing News January 2010 issue

27 December 2009

One of our two biggest issues for the year, the January magazine has 220 pages packed full of tips and tricks for novice and experienced anglers alike.

Mark Kitteridge has been to the foremost of developing soft-bait techniques and he produces this month the lead feature –‘Soft-baits in a Nutshell’ that covers all the basics.

Similarly Adam Clancey looks at rod and reel techniques, especially when that big one takes you by surprise, in his ‘Whizz, bang…! Feature.

Continuing with the ‘how to’ theme Josh Morrison explains how to prepare your own assist hooks in his ‘Jigging 101’ series while John Murphy and Mark Sherburn take a look at trout fishing in the Rotorua region with their ‘how and where to fish’ features.

For the gamefishers there is plenty in this issue, marking the start of this season. Josh Worthington explains how a change to cubing saved the situation on a slow tuna trolling day while Jeff Strang offers some advice and alternatives for trailerboat outriggers. Veteran skipper, angler and writer bill Hall offers Part II of his ‘Follow the Leader’ series that looks at using lighter trace to encourage billfish bites.

Holidays are a time to introduce kids to fishing and Bruce Basher gives us his spin of this fun activity. We also have coverage of a special day where The ITM Fishing Show presenter Matt Watson and NZ Fishing News editor Grant Dixon hosted a day on the water with a bunch of Make a Wish NZ kids. There is also a news piece on the Mac Boats TAKF winners who this year were the Foster triplets from the Bay of Plenty.

Kayaking is a growing angling discipline and this month we have two articles – one from Herb Spannagl with an anchoring system and another from Kevin O’Hanlon who uses a kayak to source some great salmon fishing.

For the fly fisher there are several strong articles. Tony Orman reports on ‘picking pockets’ while Rob Vaz looks at how to fish Lake Otamanukau. The national fly-fishing team, the Silver Flies, offer some advice on competition fishing while saltfly expert Craig Worthington explains why it pays to keep an open mind when selecting flies.

There are several major tackle reviews this month, the first looks at Daiwa slow-jig options while another checks out some new Shimano product.

The big news this month was Dave Howes’ monster 50.0kg kingfish caught aboard Pursuit. Skipper rick Pollock shares that story.

For those who like offshore adventures, Sam Mossman shares his trip to India to fish for mahseer while Mark Kitteridge explains why popper fishing is a magic way to fish.

As well as the above features, there are all the regular columns and 30 area reports such as Blokes and Boats, reader pics and stories, spearfishing, a little bit of politics, reviews and tackle tests.
