Coastguard Education features Yamaha

Keen boaties attending Coastguard education courses are also learning about the many advantages of Yamaha four stroke outboards.

The practical RYA courses run by Coastguard Northern Region and many other Coastguard Boating Education administered RYA Training Centres use boats powered by Yamaha F40 and F50 four stroke outboards – and the engines are winning new friends with every course.

Both Mike Lawrence from Coastguard Northern Region and Neil Murray from Coastguard Boating Education Service say the Yamahas have proven absolutely reliable, economical and smooth.

The outboards are often used among groups of people at boat clubs, marinas and boat shows where the clean burning, low emission four strokes are a real advantage.

During RYA Powerboating practical courses, men and women learn about many aspects of boat handling including coming alongside a pontoon, getting on and off the plane, launching and retrieval at the ramp.

Coastguard Boating Education’s training boat - a MAC 420 and the Yamaha F50 are used extensively during the courses and it has a key promotional role at boat shows where members of the public are able to try their boat handling skills around a floating obstacle course.

Mike Lawrence says the Coastguard Northern Region uses a Southern Pacific 4.7m RIB powered by the Yamaha F40. Practical courses have been well recieved, particularly the Women on the Water courses that aim to provide women with greater practical boating skills and confidence.

He says the F40 has proved reliable, and is quiet and uses amazingly little fuel.

“It’s been very economical, using only 10 or 15 litres for a two day course,” he says.

Neil Murray agrees – “the F50 has been very reliable, smooth has plenty of torque. It’s so quiet when running that the only noise is the cooling water telltale.”
