New Zealand Fishing News September 2008 edition

There has been a glimmer of hope weather wise the last few weeks, the short bursts of clear skies and relatively light winds not doing much to ease the cabin fever many of us are feeling.

While reading about fishing is a poor substitute for getting out there and doing it, there is plenty in this month’s magazine to whet the appetite if not the line, of the armchair angler.

Craig Worthington, a long time contributor based in the Bay of Islands, produced a fish of a lifetime, landing a 22 pound snapper recently. ‘No big deal’ I hear you say, ‘I’ve caught bigger’. But consider this – it was caught off the rocks, using a flyrod and just an 11.3 kg (25lb) leader. A great angling effort in anyone’s book and no wonder Craig has a grin almost as wide as the cover page he features on.

Staying on the rock theme, long time land-based guide Mark Draper concludes his three part series ‘Kingfish of the Rocks’ with a look at poppers, ways to increase hook-ups, berley and catching bait. His tip –‘always have a game plan’.

The blue cod ban in certain parts of the Marlborough Sounds is debated in this issue. Our coverage includes a feature by Peter Langlands looking at alternative species.

Soft-plastic lures continue to find favour among many anglers, especially among the North Island’s snapper aficionados. Mark Kitteridge has further refined his approach and shares his  ‘Dropping and Dragging’ technique and shares that this month.

While soft plastics have taken many conventional anglers a while to get their head around, the next ‘wave’ of new lures will prove positively mind boggling. New contributor Toby Kemp checks out ‘slow baits’ in his ‘What the Hell is That Lure?’ feature.

Editor Grant Dixon checks out the new Shimano Stabi-Craft 659 promotional boat in his Setting Up for Sportfishing’ piece while this month’s Trailer Boat Trial, written by Sam Mossman, is on the Extreme 700 Game King.
With time on your hands it is an ideal opportunity to prepare for the forthcoming season. Adam Clancey offers some advice on gear maintenance.

At this time of the year a number of readers pursue their sport offshore. Few travel as widely as Sam Mossman. In the second part of his ‘Fish of the Pharoahs’, Sam and friends check out the Nile perch while angling in Eygpt. Readers will have a chance to win their own offshore adventure with this month’s subscription prize that offers new and renewing subscribers a chance to win a trip to Vava’u, Tonga’s Tuna Fest next January.

For the freshwater angler we have a piece on ‘Heave and Leave’ where Herb Spannagl takes a look at glo-bugging on the Tongariro. Regular columnist John Murphy, quite appropriately, takes a look at how to fish ‘dirty’ water.
Just around the corner is Father’s Day and there are several pages of gift suggestions, as well as four pages with reviews of the latest DVD’s and books. Best leave the magazine open at the appropriate page with a PostIt note attached!

Enjoy your reading.
