Fishing News - August Issue

While the depths of winter may be upon us, there are still some reports of good fishing about the place.

As is normal for this time of year the bite is shorter and softer, requiring different techniques. A number of these are discussed in this month’s issue. Kayaker Stephen Tapp looks at winter tactics for ‘yakers, which can also just as easily apply to more conventional boat anglers. While this focuses on snapper,

Adam Clancey’s feature this month takes a look at trevally and how to target them at this time of the year. Freshwater specialist John Murphy offers some suggestions on attracting a strike from sluggish trout in his Murphy’s Law column.

Looking towards bigger game, land based guide Mark Draper presents the second in his series on kingfish off the bricks. There are several other strong land based features this month. For the surfcasters, Gary Kemsley in his Casting About column checks out soft baits off the beach while Peter Langlands highlights the challenges of beach fishing in the South Island. Whether to go hard on a fish or back off is the dilemma regular contributor Craig Worthington discusses.

Soft plastic bait fishing continues to evolve and one of those at the forefront is Mark Kitteridge. In the first of a two-part series, Mark looks at different techniques in his ‘dropping and dragging’ article. Editor Grant Dixon presents the second part of his tackle testing sojourn to the Far North aboard 'Double Strike' where the new Shimano Lucanus ‘slow jigs’ feature, along with The King, a new jig on the market.

It is getting close to the start of the bluefin tuna season off the Mainland’s west coast. Leading into this is the second of the Bluewater Research teams finding into the tagging programme instituted last season.
Fish of the Pharaohs is the eye catching title of Sam Mossman’s offshore adventure to Egypt where he takes on Nile perch and some other interesting species.
